Heterovalent Ternary Nitrides

GaN and related group-III nitrides form the basis of blue and white LED and laser diodes. The II-IV-N2 nitrides are a closely related family obtained by replacing every group III by a combination of group II and group IV elements, e.g. ZnGeN2, such that each N is surrounded by two group II and two group IV. These materials, have novel properties compared to the III-N because of their lower symmetry, the different and more complex defect chemistry, the role of the Zn-3d states, and so on. We study their vibrational modes, band structures, optical properties, order-disorder phenomena, defects, elastic and piezo-electric properties.
